Use a separate fax number on a shared phone line.

With a distinctive ring service each number on the line rings differently. The printer can answer only the fax number’s pattern. HP suggests a double or triple ring for fax.

Steps

Make sure Auto Answer is on.
On the Home screen tap Menu, scroll to Utilities and tap Settings, then Fax Settings → Fax Receive, and tap Distinctive Ring.
Pick the pattern: single, double, triple, double and triple, or all standard rings. Or tap Record Ring Pattern and let the printer learn it from a call.

Good to know

No distinctive ring service? Leave it on All Standard Rings.
On a PBX system, call the fax number from an outside line when recording.
